KEN CAILLAT
Ken Caillat is a Grammy-winning record producer and engineer. His legendary work has earned him multiple Grammy nominations including ‘Best Engineered Album’, and the ‘Album of the Year’ Grammy award for Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours”, one the best selling albums of all time. Additionally, he produced Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk”, “Mirage”, “Live”, and “The Chain Box Set”, and his other credits include superstars Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Christine McVie, and many others.
Caillat is also a director, author, and musician. In 2012 he released the book “Making Rumours”, a memoir about his experiences producing and engineering the iconic album, and in 2019, he published “Get Tusked”, about the making of the band’s multi-platinum double album,“Tusk”.
He is the father of singer-songwriter, Colbie Caillat, and worked to develop and promote her singing career. He was the executive producer, co-producer and co-mixer for her platinum selling album, “Coco”, released by Universal Music Group (UMG) in 2007; for “Breakthrough”, which reached #1 on the Billboard Record Charts in 2009; and for “All of You” in 2011. He also created the Dolby Atmos mix of her single “Worth It” in 2023.
In 2023 Caillat opened Marshmellow Skies Studio in Westlake Village, CA, along with partners, veteran engineer, Claus Trelby (Dishwalla, Sting, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell), and managing partner, Nitanee Paris. Ken and Claus built a custom Immersive Audio studio (9.1.6) that was expertly designed with famed Acoustician/Studio Designer, George Augspurger. It is equipped with state-of-the-art KRK studio monitors, and supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, and Sony 360, as well as all traditional audio formats.
The team was commissioned by Warner Music to remix five of the most loved Joni Mitchell records in Dolby Atmos, including “The Asylum Albums” (“Court and Spark”, “Miles of Aisles”, “The Hissing of Summer Lawns”, and “For the Roses”), released by Rhino Records in September 2022, and “Joni Mitchell At Newport Live”, released in July 2023, which won the 2024 Grammy for Best Folk Album.
In 2012 Ken founded Sleeping Giant Records and combined forces with Alcon Entertainment, and later went on to start ArtistMax, an artist development and education enterprise based in Westlake Village, CA, along with his business partner and Director of A&R, Nitanee Paris.
In 2019, Ken and a group of investors purchased the Sausalito Record Plant, the studio where he recorded the iconic Fleetwood Mac album “Rumours”. The studio is being renovated and Caillat hopes to reopen it soon as a full service recording and a museum of the rich history of the legendary music that was created there.
In 1989-1997, Ken was co-founder and president of Highway One Media Entertainments, dedicated to create CD-Roms for the new interactive computer media market with clients that included Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Warner Records, the Estate of Elvis Presley and Angel/EMI Records. Highway One created over 200 hit CD-Roms.
1998-2003, Ken founded and was the president of 5.1 Entertainment Group Digital Production Services, which has worked on 5.1 DVD Audio conversions of albums for Billy Idol, Frank Sinatra, Pat Benatar, Wilson Phillips, the Beach Boys, Herbie Hancock, David Becker Tribune, and Alice Cooper, in addition to Fleetwood Mac, remastering in 5.1 DVD audio format. Ken has mixed over 200 songs in 96k/24bit 5.1 six channel music from original multi-track sources including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, The Beach Boys, Pat Benetar, Wilson Philips, Fleetwood Mac, Herbie Hancock and Alice Cooper.
In 2003 Ken sold 5.1 Entertainment and formed Xepa Digital, to begin the first exclusive audio preservation company. They began working with clients such as Warner Records, Universal Music, BMG, and Sony. During his time there, they preserved more than 10,000 tapes. In 2006 Xepa Digital was purchased by Iron Mountain Inc.
