Like Kerrville 32 contestants vie for 6 finalist positions and a grand prize winner. NATALIA BORTOLOTTI and NELSON SAID, both WCS members and Songfellowz Songwriting company owners, had two songs place as finalists in the POP category of VH1 song of the year contest (www.songoftheyear.com ). Natalia's song "Your only other" placed in February (2004) while Nelson's song "In a little more time" placed in March (2004). NORMA RODRIGUEZ- spoke the lyrics for a song called Frida Kahlo by a local band, Latin Soul Syndicate. Jeff Pistel is the one who hired her to contribute lyrics & her voice on a demo he was marketing to find Film, TV & commercial work. Two years later, in February, she received a call from him: "Remember I said I would let you know if anything happened with the song..."The song is in the movie "The Whole Ten Yards" starring Bruce Willis & Mathew Perry. Composer is John Debney (just finishing his work on.."The Passion" you know, Mel Gibson's movie! Mr. Debney heard her voice on the song Frida Kahlo that was being considered for the movie... he said "find me that voice" so they did, She said yes, they flew her down for one day (6 hours later, she translated Mr Debney's english lyrics to latin, then laid them down in 3 hours, 18 tracks later) The Frida Kahlo Song made it into the 1st part of the movie, as well as a latin coro track where Norma is the only female voice but didn't write the lyrics (in the beginning of movie & the last track of the film as credits close). MICA LEE WILLIAMS recently received the honor of being named Finalist by the Song of the Year ( http://www.songoftheyear.com/ ) songwriting contest. Song of the Year is an international songwriting contest supporting VH-1âs Save the Music Foundation. The Song of the Year judges are some of the biggest names in music including many Grammy Award winners. A couple of years back, long-time WCS songwriter TONY VANDERSTEEN (SBOM manager) was awarded the job of collaborating with San Jose playright Dale Porter on a new musical called Necklace. Last month the musical was accepted by the Theatre in the Mountains at Loma Prieta for their 2005 spring musical. Tony has written the 17 song score and is currently working with renowned local musical director Bob Russell in orchestrating the entire musical. KARMINA took part in a fund raiser for Sacramento radio station The Zone FM 100.5 their song ``Favorite Fantasy" was aired during the Shawn & Jeff morning show. Chris Douridas, host of ``New Ground" on LA's KCRW, was the music supervisor for the film who suggested the song to director Luke Greenfield, having first heard Binocular's demo of ``Maybe You're Gone" while working as an A&R rep at Dreamworks. JOHN LESTER is the opening act and bassist for Gretchen Peters' upcoming UK/Ireland Tour (May 20-June 7). As you know they met in 1999 at the WCS conference. In late June of 2003, MICHAEL MCNEVIN will be touring through Cooperstown, NY where he will play a concert at the Baseball Hall Of Fame theater. JOHN LESTER's new song ``Out of the Clear Blue Sky" has been released on the compilation CD ``Peace Not War". The disc is a collection of pro-peace songs by various international artists including Ani DiFranco, Billy Bragg, Massive Attack, Public Enemy, and Ms Dynamite (among many others). All proceeds go towards local, national, and international pro-peace organizations and helps to fund worldwide peace rallies such as the events on February 15th of this year. MARCUS BARONE has booked NCSA songwriters and performers KAMILLE and KELLY RUDISILL to sing for a Warner Brothers Television test pilot. The successful recording was done in Los Angeles. POTTS' song, The Ballad of Poker Alice, is a finalist/winner for the Artists for Literacy/Songs Inspired by Literature (SIBL) Chapter Two album, scheduled for nationwide release March 12. His song will be included on the album with Tom Waits, Steve Earle,David Bowie, Roseanne Cash, Vicky Randle, and others. Potts wrote the song after reading Steven Ambrose's historical account of building the early Transcontinental Railroad, Nothing Like It in the World. CHRIS DONOHOE and NYREE BELLEVILLE just found out that their song ``When I'm With You" is a finalist in the Country category of the 2002 John Lennon Songwriting Contest! DreamWorks picked CANDY CAMERON'S option for another year. In this past year she had songs recorded by Kenny Rogers (w/Alison Krauss); Jamie O'Neal; Susan Ashton, and an upcoming band on Curb Records called Mustang Sally. The tracks were arranged and produced by MARCUS BARONE and sung by TIM HOCKENBERRY. Marcus' FILM MUSIC GROUP in Los Angeles negotiated the deal with the US armed Forces Radio and Television Network. JOEL EVANS recently had two songs licensed into ``Felicity" now airing in syndication on the WB network. Michael Eames at Pen Music of Hollywood inked the deal for ``So Near", cowritten with J.Elle and ``Jumpin' at the Juke Joint", cowritten with Ken McKenzie. NINA PUNO signed a single song deal w/ Curb Magnatone for ``Right By Me". NYREE's song ``Never Say Goodbye" has been licensed for the feature film, ``The Vengeance of Cinderella"! ANTONIA VENEZIA sang at The San Jose Jazz Festival in August with the Musicians Warehouse Big Band. The concert was recorded by NPR Radio and it may air in the near future. That morning, Antonia was interviewed live on KSJS Radio, and her original compositions were played on air. The band was also auctioned off on KTEH T.V. for a performance that will be in October 2002. PHIL BEARCE & TIM RYAN (Pale Moon Sky) had a song aired on ``Glory Days" on the WB Networkand. Sixteen year old Alexandra will be featured as America's rising teen artist. Alexandra has recently signed with Dan Cleary Management in Los Angeles. Mr. Cleary is responsible for discovering and developing the careers of such legendary artists as The Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John and Natalie Cole, among others. Alexandra has also signed on with the Grubman Entertainment Law Firm in New York, which handles such music lumininaries as Britney Spears, N'Sync and Alicia Keyes. Michael McNevin was hired to write and produce a six song EP for The Learning Company (owned by Mattel at the time). It is a Music CD that accompanied the Oregon Trail Learning Software, distributed nationally during the 2000 and 2001 Holliday season. The CD is called ``Songs Of The Oregon Trail" and is basically a folk record of original songs relating to that time of history. Another Rockabilly Hall Of Fame inductee, Garlin Hackney of Hack and the 57's, has finished a new CD in Nashville and has recorded a song Dave wrote for him called ``Somewhere In My Mind". Hack said he wanted to have a real `Bakersfield' type of sound for this album. So Dave sat down with his favorite Buck, Merle and Dwight records for about a week to get in the mood. Tony Lasley - A song picked up at a pitch about 3 years ago through NCSA is in the new HeartBreaker movie...Funny movie. (MasterSource) Rick Glaze - ``My Dot Com" from Rick Glaze's debut CD, Silicon Cowboy, was played on National Public Radio (NPR) on the business show Market Place on March 19, 2001. Investment website www.investars.com is giving the CD as a gift to new subscribers. In his column titled ``Unsigned Artists Who Deserve Grammy Recognition", Billboard magazine Talent Editor Larry Flick gave Mark Weigle's song "A Good Day" Record of the Year. Flick also chose Mark's CD ``All That Matters" among his Top 10 CDs of 2000 in Billboard's Critic's Choice issue at #6. Mark was the only indie artist on Flick's list. NCSA members win the Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest NCSA transplants, Diona Devincenzi and Carol Hashe, won the $25,000 Grand Prize in the Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest. Carol and Diona both moved to Nashville to pursue their songwriting careers. Both were very active members of NCSA, taking classes, networking and collaborating. It's wonderful to see their commitment to the craft of songwriting validated in this way. Mary Chapin Carpenter, who was part of the very first Lilith Fair lineup in 1997, announced the winners of The ASCAP Foundation Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest at the ASCAP Country Music Awards Dinner in Nashville. The response to this first-ever songwriting contest for women, with over 2,000 entries, was wonderful. The entries, from all parts of the country and in all musical styles, went through a multitiered judging procedure including on-line judging by the public. This process culminated in the blue-ribbon panel of top women songwriters and music industry executives making the selection of the Grand Prize Winner and Runner-Up. The contest prizes are being funded by a group of the country's most prominent women songwriters. The ASCAP Foundation Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest, cosponsored by The ASCAP Foundation and Lilith Fair, is a national competition designed to encourage women songwriters. Entries were limited to original songs by women songwriters not signed to a record or publishing company at the time of entry or at the time of award announcement. Penny Framstad"Even Angels Fall" was selected as the promotional song for this fall's premiere TV prime time drama, Once and Again on ABC.
